The Queens Market Lighting Project, commissioned by the London Borough of Newham in 2024, is an ongoing initiative aimed at modernising the market’s electrical and lighting systems through a phased approach. Phase 1 involved the installation of temporary lighting carried out overnight to avoid disrupting daily operations. In Phase 2, outdated lighting was replaced with energy-efficient LED systems in 10-meter segments, ensuring the market remained functional. Phase 3 focused on upgrading the East electrical plant room with advanced switchgear, surge protection, and a smart dimmable lighting control system to enhance safety and efficiency. Phase 4 rewired shop front lighting using durable materials to improve reliability and aesthetics, coordinated with Phase 2 to maintain workflow efficiency. Phase 5, currently in progress, includes the replacement of front canopies with integrated LED lighting and the installation of a new control system and illuminated signage, significantly improving energy efficiency, flexibility, and the overall ambience of the market.
